Living In Rockland County

If you work in New York City, arguably the most sophisticated and famous city in the world, you will be amazed at the differences you'll find when you come home to Rockland County at the end of a hard day's work. The smallest county in New York State offers an incredible variety of lifestyles and Rockland County real estate... from the funky edge of life and Hudson River homes and Villages, to the solid feel of suburban neighborhoods, to the quietude of the wooden enclaves in northern New City and the Ramapo hills.

Just forty five minutes from midtown, you'll find nineteenth century villages that still have all-volunteer fire departments, part-time village boards, lovely trails along the Hudson River, and lots of green space, ... in fact, one-third of Rockland County is parkland. This string of Victorian riverfront villages and hamlets, stretching from Palisades to Upper Nyack and on to Stony Point, is nestled along the west bank of the Hudson River. Some of the more alluring communities and unique living opportunities to explore include Sneden's Landing real estate, Palisades real estate, Piermont real estate, Grandview real estate and Nyack real estate, all within a comfortable 25-30 minute drive to the George Washington Bridge and New York City.

Rockland County was one of the first areas colonized by the Dutch settlers in the 1600's. It was also the setting for some of the most important events of the Revolutionary period. In later years, Rockland's beauty and proximity to New York City attracted the most talented and interesting people on the American arts, literary and stage scene. Rockland is so small, it is often overlooked. But we value its little known treasures, and we are happy to share them with you. Exploring our county with one of our agents will make you appreciate what makes Rockland County living special. After all, Rockland County is William Raveis Baer & McIntosh territory.

Little Known Neighborhoods In Rockland County
Want to find a hideaway, something that's off the main roads? Try these lovely, historic neighborhoods...

Tappan homes, Blauvelt homes, Palisades homes, and the tiny Sneden's Landing enclave of distinct estates, figured prominently in the early history of our nation. They are at the very southernmost tip of the county, and George Washington did, indeed, sleep here . . . probably in more than one home, but most definitely in the DeWindt house in Tappan, which was his headquarters at the close of the revolution. Major John Andre, British accomplice to Benedict Arnold, was tried and hanged in Tappan, and his jail is now The 1776 House restaurant.

Tappan was the first official Dutch settlement in the area that would become Rockland County. Nearby, Palisades, NY real estate, offers a little slice of a New England village, with peaceful-looking old houses. Next to the Hudson River homes is Sneden's Landing, once the site of Molly Sneden's ferry service (she reportedly ferried Martha Washington and her entourage) and now home to a number of well-known people in the arts. This is a neighborhood graced with impressively beautiful homes, quiet winding lanes, and lovely views.

Sparkill real estate sits "inland" from Piermont, and has a tiny center, with an old post office, an imposing old bank building, and just a few little stores and restaurants. After passenger rail service was dropped on the West Shore, Sparkill was frozen in time, and today it's a time-traveler's delight.

In the northern part of New City, NY real estate opportunities, close to exit 12 on the Palisades parkway, there is a rural area on and around South Mountain Road homes, a winding, woodsy surprise in the midst of suburbia. In the early 20th century, it became home to a number of artists, writers and performers, and a number of their unique homes remain today. Alan Jay Lerner wrote Brigadoon while living in these woods. Playwright Maxwell Anderson penned Hi Tor here, a successful play that put an end to plans to mine the back of Hi Tor Mountain.

Further upriver, in the far reaches of North Rockland, the little communities of Tomkins Cove homes and Grassy Point homes are at the north eastern corner of Rockland County. They're near the Hudson River in the historic Township of Stony Point real estate, and both offer charming older homes for privacy-seekers. Prices are a bit lower here than they are in southern Rockland County.

These are just some of the highlights of the many and varied neighborhoods in Rockland County. At William Raveis Baer & McIntosh, we'd love to show you all of them!

Rockland County Hometowns
If you thirst for a small, quiet "hometown" with a main street, here are a few places with appeal.

Suffern real estate, situated in the western part, near the border with Orange County real estate, and New Jersey, has an old-timey feel, with plenty of small shops, old buildings, and little side streets. It's the place where the Avon cosmetics company was born (it was originally called The California Perfume Company), and the firm is in the midst of expanding to stay at its original site right in the middle of town. Here's where you'll find the only old movie theater still in operation in Rockland County. The Lafayette Theater presents films without intermission and advertisements, and every Friday and Saturday, there's live music in the balcony from a mighty Wurlitzer organ!

Suffern's old-fashioned charm is a little deceptive, because it's also a major commuter transportation hub. The intersection of the NY State Thruway with Routes 17 and 287 is located here, and the Suffern train station is one of the major stops on the rail line that runs toward the Jersey crossings to mid-town and downtown Manhattan. Other stops for train-lovers are Sloatsburg, Spring Valley, Nanuet, and Pearl River.

Pearl River homes and real estate, billed "The Town of Friendly People" by its denizens, is a hamlet near the New Jersey border. Commuters still run to catch the train at the old station near the post office, there's a cannon in the little park adjoining the station (with a war memorial), and up on Central Avenue, there's a big field with a bandstand. The annual Fourth of July fireworks show is legendary, and the St. Patrick's Day Parade is said to be second in size only to the famous Manhattan parade.

Congers real estate is a tiny hamlet framed by several small lakes. There are Victorians, cottages, bungalows, and colonials as well as more contemporary houses. The Main Street area is undergoing a facelift, with the addition of new sidewalks and old-fashioned street lights, and the old train station is in the midst of being remodeled into a community center. Rick's Club American, a great rib place, and The Last Chance Saloon, one of the funkiest taverns in the area, are located here!
